How to use

Soak is a low-rinse (or even no-rinse) formulation that lifts dirt and grime from laundry and leaves it suspended in water. This protects delicates from the need for vigorous rinsing.

  • Use cold water, if washing silk or wool. Soak is suitable for hand-washing or a washing machine (including HE).
  • Just soak and squeeze. No need to rinse.
  • Hang or lay flat to dry.
  • Wash sets (such as Copper North silks or your favorite lingerie) together.
  • Test fabric for color-fastness.

When in doubt, follow directions on detergent packaging.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Why does silk need a special detergent?

Silk is a protein-based fiber, unlike cotton (a cellulose- or plant-based fiber) or synthetics, which come from petroleum. Regular detergents are formulated for cotton and synthetics, which means higher pH levels and often enzymes designed to break down protein-based stains, like food, sweat, and grass stains. Both features are genuinely damaging to silk over time: high pH strips the natural proteins that give silk its sheen and softness, while enzymes degrade the fiber structure wash by wash.

Soak Wash is plant-derived, pH-appropriate for delicate natural fibers, and gentle enough to clean without quietly destroying what you're cleaning.

For full care guidance, see How to Wash Silk.

Can I use Soak Wash in a washing machine?

Yes! Machine or hand wash, both work. We recommend hand-washing but absolutely use machine washing when we’re pressed for time.

For Copper North silk, use the delicate cycle, cold water, and ideally, a mesh laundry bag. If hand washing, skip the rinse entirely. Soak is a no-rinse formula, which is one less step and one less opportunity to stress the fiber.

What fabrics can I use Soak Wash on?

Silk, wool, cashmere, linen, lingerie, baby clothes, just about anything that deserves better than a standard detergent. It's not designed for heavily soiled laundry or everyday synthetics, where a regular detergent will do the actual work. Think of Soak as reserved for the things worth taking care of.

Can I use Soak Wash as my everyday detergent?

For delicate and natural fiber items, yes. For everything else, such as denim, gym clothes, anything that's genuinely dirty, a standard detergent is a better fit. Most people find Soak earns a permanent spot next to the washing machine for the items that actually need it.

What are the ingredients in Soak Wash?

For the most current list, verify directly at soakwash.com: we can't guarantee this reflects any future formulation changes on their end. That said, this is the latest formulation data we have:

Aqua, Coco-Glucoside, Glycerin, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Glyceryl Oleate, Parfum, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Propanediol, Potassium Sorbate, Benzophenone-4, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA.

Scentless contains the same formula without Parfum.

How much Soak Wash do I use per wash?

Less than you think. For hand washing, one teaspoon per gallon of water in your basin. For machine washing, one teaspoon per gallon of your machine's capacity, which works out to roughly 5–7 tablespoons for a standard top-loader, or  2-3 tablespoons for a high-efficiency front-loader. Check your machine's manual for its water capacity if you're not sure.

Will Soak Wash affect the copper infusion in my Copper North pillowcase?

It's one of the reasons we recommend it. Harsh detergents with high pH or aggressive surfactants can affect both silk fiber integrity and copper infusion over time. Soak's gentle formula avoids the ingredients most likely to cause that degradation. Cold water, delicate cycle, line dry. It’s the same approach that protects both the silk and the copper long-term.
